dc.description.abstract | The Internet and social media have become essential parts of modern life. While this continues to impact speed and quality of delivery positively, one sad problem associated with the technology is cybercrime. This study aims to evaluate the level of cybercrime awareness in Nigeria and find ways to mitigate cybercrimes in Nigeria. Anchored on Technological Determinism and Protection Motivation Theories, the research combines qualitative analysis of relevant literature with primary data collected through a 7-point in-depth interview in which 20 participants were purposively selected from the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria. The study's findings show that Nigerians are well aware of cybercrimes; although Nigeria has legislation to combat cybercrimes, it is ineffective due to a lack of public knowledge. People take action on their own to mitigate cybercrime because the public is unsure of the government's efforts. It is recommended that the government creates job and educational opportunities to discourage would-be criminals, enact effective laws that the public is aware of and penalize defaulters; also that citizens would maintain awareness of information regarding security breaches and use strong passwords that are updated regularly. | en_US |
