Abstract: | This chapter assessed international news agencies, globalization and the debate on neo-colonialism. Premised on the tenets of dependency theory while the secondary sources of data relevant to the discourse were relied upon for analysis, it was revealed that international news agencies because of their advantages of extensive global network, fast circulation, easier circulation, versatility, not bound by location, highly economical as well as wider reach are used by developed nations of the world to expand communication links between different regions whereas colonialism was the expansion of both power and territory. This further widens the gap in information as flow developing countries are negatively reported as countries plagued by insecurity challenges, war, epidemics, corruption, hunger, political instability among others. The chapter thus recommends that developing countries should improve on the existing media stations available with a view to minimize the over dependency on international news agencies for information about events within and outside their immediate environment. Besides, the existing media in developing countries should churn out content that will be useful to their ever-increasing audience members to minimize the over dependency on foreign media and leaders in developing countries should focus on making life meaningful for their citizens to minimize the over dependency on developed countries. |
